Basic economy across the Atlantic in 2026: what you actually get

Aisha Rahman, lead travel advisor · August 28, 2026

Six airlines fly nonstop between New York and London this winter, and all of them sell a stripped-back economy fare. The names differ (Economy Basic, Basic Economy, Economy Light, Delta Main Basic, Blue Basic) but the trade is the same: a lower price for no checked bag, no changes and a seat assigned for you.

The rules side by side

The arithmetic

On most dates the step up from basic to standard economy on this route is around $120 round trip, and it includes a checked bag each way. If you were going to check a bag, two bag fees at $75 cost $150, so the standard fare is cheaper and you also get a seat and (on American, Delta and United) no change fee. If you travel with a carry-on only and your dates are fixed, basic is fine.

The other thing basic fares lose is flexibility. If your plans move, a basic fare is usually gone. A standard fare on the US carriers can be changed with no fee, which also means that if the price drops we can rebook you into it and refund the difference.

What we do

When you book with us we show every fare family side by side with the bag and change rules, and if you call, an advisor will ask the bag question before you pay.
